{"id":2319,"date":"2010-04-15T23:38:32","date_gmt":"2010-04-16T04:38:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/m.ammoth.us\/blog\/?p=2319"},"modified":"2010-04-15T23:39:27","modified_gmt":"2010-04-16T04:39:27","slug":"waste-to-energy-plants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/m.ammoth.us\/blog\/2010\/04\/waste-to-energy-plants\/","title":{"rendered":"waste-to-energy plants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/13\/science\/earth\/13trash.html?src=me&amp;ref=general\">article<\/a> in the <em>New York Times<\/em> discusses Europe&#8217;s waste-to-energy plants (which are key components of a successful closed-loop manufacturing process) and why no such plants are under construction in the United States:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The lawyers and engineers who dwell in an elegant enclave here [in Horsholm, Denmark] are at  peace with the hulking neighbor just over the back fence: a vast energy  plant that burns thousands of tons of household garbage and industrial  waste, round the clock&#8230; such plants have become both the mainstay  of garbage disposal and a crucial fuel source across Denmark,  from wealthy exurbs like Horsholm to Copenhagen\u2019s downtown area. Their  use has not only reduced the country\u2019s energy costs and reliance on oil  and gas, but also benefited the environment, diminishing the use of  landfills and cutting carbon dioxide emissions&#8230; With all these innovations, Denmark now regards garbage as a clean  alternative fuel rather than a smelly, unsightly problem&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;a <a title=\"Text (PDF).\" href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1021\/es802395e\">2009 study<\/a> by the E.P.A. and <a title=\"More articles about North Carolina State  University\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/n\/north_carolina_state_university\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\">North  Carolina State University<\/a> scientists came  down strongly in favor  of waste-to-energy plants over landfills as the  most environmentally  friendly destination for urban waste that cannot be  recycled.
