and then promptly forgot about the piece, until I was reminded of it by <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/pruned\/status\/52825802789756928\">Alexander Trevi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The piece begins by noting that &#8220;today, Canada is the single biggest foreign source of oil for the U.S., and industry analysts project that 20 years from now, it may be supplying one-fourth of all U.S. oil needs&#8221;, which puts the importance of those infrastructures into clear perspective.\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/03\/29\/134928228\/as-canadian-oil-moves-south-americans-push-back\">That piece<\/a>, which then describes domestic opposition to expanding both those infrastrucures and our reliance on Canadian oil, is well worth reading, as is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/03\/30\/134951636\/canadian-oil-bottleneck-means-cheaper-gas-for-some\">yesterday&#8217;s sequel<\/a>, which looks at how infrastructural bottlenecks influence market prices.)\u00a0 With apologies to Trevi, who triggered the idea for this post by not only sharing the original article, but also <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/pruned\/status\/52826531134836737\">hunting down the TransCanada pipeline&#8217;s Illinois terminus<\/a>, I&#8217;ve put together a short aerial tour of the infrastructures &#8212; the pipeline is essentially invisible, being buried underground, but attendant tank farms, pumping stations, and refineries leave obvious marking patterns on the land &#8212; so helpfully mapped by NPR.<\/p>\n<p>This tour is split into two components: first, TransCanada&#8217;s Keystone pipeline system (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.transcanada.com\/docs\/Key_Projects\/keystone_may_2010.pdf\">PDF<\/a>), which runs from Alberta through Manitoba via a fork in Nebraska to endpoints in Illinois and Oklahoma, and second, trucking corridors in Montana and Idaho, used by both Imperial Oil and ConocoPhilips.\u00a0 (You can see the two maps that this tour is based on in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/03\/29\/134928228\/as-canadian-oil-moves-south-americans-push-back\">the original article<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keystone Pipeline<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4505\" title=\"hardisty\" src=\"http:\/\/m.ammoth.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/hardisty.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"http:\/\/m.ammoth.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/hardisty.jpg 525w, http:\/\/m.ammoth.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/hardisty-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>[The Keystone Pipeline &#8212;
