{"id":5966,"date":"2011-10-24T20:27:11","date_gmt":"2011-10-25T01:27:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/m.ammoth.us\/blog\/?p=5966"},"modified":"2011-10-24T20:27:11","modified_gmt":"2011-10-25T01:27:11","slug":"soft-landscapes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/m.ammoth.us\/blog\/2011\/10\/soft-landscapes\/","title":{"rendered":"soft landscapes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5970\" title=\"soft-landscapes_poster\" src=\"http:\/\/m.ammoth.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/soft-landscapes_poster.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"406\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This week, I&#8217;ve organized a short (very short) lecture series for the students in my studio (well, the &#8220;Post-Natural Ecologies&#8221; half of the studio) at Virginia Tech&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waac.vt.edu\/\">Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday at 5:15, Fred Scharmen (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevensixfive.net\/01a\/01.html\">sevensixfive<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/w-as.net\/\">the Working Group on Adaptive Systems<\/a>) will give a talk entitled &#8220;Soft Sites&#8221;, examining four sites on the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River, which are &#8220;all located at the intersections of infrastructure, industry, and commerce&#8221;. \u00a0Though these sites are seemingly &#8220;castoffs&#8221;, Fred argues that &#8220;closer examination reveals a more complicated reality \u2013 [they] are in fact mirrors of their surroundings, visible evidence of the shifting political, economic, environmental and cultural interests that compete to determine the creation of new space and development&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Friday at 4:00, Brett Milligan (<a href=\"http:\/\/freeassociationdesign.wordpress.com\/\">Free Association Design<\/a>) will speak on &#8220;Landscapes of Dredge: Cycles and Choreography&#8221;, looking at the industrial act of dredging as a component of a wider system of anthropogenically-accelerated sediment handling processes which generate a fascinating array of diverse and bizarre landscapes. \u00a0(Brett is based in Portland, Oregon, and will be joining us via the internet.)<\/p>\n<p>While this is rather late notice, both of the lectures are free, so if you&#8217;re in the DC area either tomorrow (Tuesday 25 October) or Friday (28 October), feel free to stop by &#8212; as the poster above says, we&#8217;ll be in the Red Room of the WAAC (1001 Prince Street).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week, I&#8217;ve organized a short (very short) lecture series for the students in my studio (well, the &#8220;Post-Natural Ecologies&#8221; half of the studio) at Virginia Tech&#8217;s Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center.
