{"id":677,"date":"2009-09-06T13:17:22","date_gmt":"2009-09-06T19:17:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/m.ammoth.us\/blog\/?p=677"},"modified":"2009-09-07T10:49:13","modified_gmt":"2009-09-07T16:49:13","slug":"wpa-20","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/m.ammoth.us\/blog\/2009\/09\/wpa-20\/","title":{"rendered":"wpa 2.0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Its taken me a few days to notice it (because both Stephen and I&#8217;ve been on mini-<a href=\"http:\/\/covblogs.com\/eatingbark\/archives\/2009\/08\/my_august_vacation_in_monument.html\">vacations<\/a> from the internet), but the winners of WPA 2.0 contest <a href=\"http:\/\/wpa2.aud.ucla.edu\/info\/\">have been announced<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caption-wide\">&#8220;Urban Beach&#8221;, from Darina Zlateva and Takuma Ono&#8217;s winning entry, <a href=\"http:\/\/wpa2.aud.ucla.edu\/info\/index.php?\/finalists\/p1168-hydro-genic-city-2020\/\">&#8220;Hydro-Genic City, 2020&#8221;<\/a><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"525\" height=\"331\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-678\" title=\"wpa-urban-beach\" src=\"http:\/\/m.ammoth.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/wpa-urban-beach.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/m.ammoth.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/wpa-urban-beach.jpg 525w, http:\/\/m.ammoth.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/wpa-urban-beach-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The six winners propose harvesting biofuels from <a href=\"http:\/\/wpa2.aud.ucla.edu\/info\/index.php?\/finalists\/p1014-urban-algae-speculation-and-optimization-mi\/\">pools of algae<\/a> fed by the underwater emissions of cars in the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, <a href=\"http:\/\/wpa2.aud.ucla.edu\/info\/index.php?\/finalists\/p1117-coupling-infrastructures\/\">converting the Salton Sea<\/a> from agricultural wastewater dumping ground to a hybrid of recreational uses, economically valuable micro-infrastructures, and artificially enhanced ecologies (that proposal is by <a href=\"http:\/\/infranetlab.org\/blog\/2009\/09\/wpa-2-0-phase-1\/\">Lateral\/Infranet Lab<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/wpa2.aud.ucla.edu\/info\/index.php?\/finalists\/p1145-border-wall-as-infrastructure\/\">reconfiguring the US-Mexico border wall<\/a> in thirty different ways, opening the Los Angeles waterworks as a series of <a href=\"http:\/\/wpa2.aud.ucla.edu\/info\/index.php?\/finalists\/p1168-hydro-genic-city-2020\/\">public spaces activated by the presence of water<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/wpa2.aud.ucla.edu\/info\/index.php?\/finalists\/p1155-1000000000-global-water-refugees\/\">resettling climate-change refugees<\/a> in the post-industrial landscapes of the Rust Belt, and reclaiming the discarded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfpt.org\/Default.aspx?tabid=254\">&#8220;unaccepted streets&#8221;<\/a> of San Francisco as public parks.\u00a0 My first impression is that the winners (generally) have found an excellent balance between offering believable proposals and transformative proposals, which is right where you&#8217;d like to see the winners of competitions situated.<\/p>\n<p>The winners, jury, and &#8220;national policymakers&#8221;
