{"id":70,"date":"2009-04-14T10:19:36","date_gmt":"2009-04-14T16:19:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/m.ammoth.us\/blog\/?p=70"},"modified":"2009-04-14T10:19:36","modified_gmt":"2009-04-14T16:19:36","slug":"on-a-more-positive-note","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/m.ammoth.us\/blog\/2009\/04\/on-a-more-positive-note\/","title":{"rendered":"on a more positive note"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Its not exactly high-speed rail, but, <a href=\"http:\/\/m.ammoth.us\/blog\/2009\/04\/dont-mess-with-my-trains\/\">unlike Becker&#8217;s state<\/a>, mine is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2009\/03\/25\/AR2009032503077.html?referrer=emailarticle\">adding rail service<\/a> &#8212; Richmond-DC and Lynchburg-Charlottesville-DC, which should allow me to realize my dream of living in the Fan District and commuting to DC.  Which isn&#8217;t to disagree at all with what Stephen noted &#8212; there is a real problem in the disconnect between Obama&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Travel\/Story?id=7306761&amp;page=1\">rhetoric on rail<\/a> and his action on rail<\/p>\n<p>Side note: a bit of context in that <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Travel\/Story?id=7306761&amp;page=1\">ABCNews story<\/a> would be nice &#8212; while eight billion dollars sounds like a grand investment in high speed rail and unfortunately really does qualify as &#8220;the biggest commitment of its kind ever made by the federal government&#8221;, it also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/world\/unitedstates\/displaystory.cfm?story_id=13446666&amp;fsrc=rss\">isn&#8217;t enough<\/a> to build any one of the currently proposed lines in California (which has the most advanced plans) and doesn&#8217;t look particularly impressive in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.infrastructurist.com\/2009\/04\/06\/chart-comparing-new-hs-projects-around-the-world\/\">context of routes under construction worldwide<\/a>.\u00a0 Which isn&#8217;t to say that its awful &#8212; it is far better than nothing &#8212; but only that excitement ought to be tempered by the realization that this is only a first step.<\/p>\n<p><em>[Virginia intercity rail story via <a href=\"http:\/\/discoveringurbanism.blogspot.com\/2009\/03\/transportation-in-virginia-is-on-the.html\">Daniel Nairn<\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Its not exactly high-speed rail, but, unlike Becker&#8217;s state, mine is adding rail service &#8212; Richmond-DC and Lynchburg-Charlottesville-DC, which should allow me to realize my dream of living in the Fan District and commuting to DC.
